# Making shorts

> Short-form video: pulling shorts out of a video you already have, making one from scratch, or bringing your own footage.

**Shorts** in the side menu is short-form video — vertical, thirty to a hundred
seconds, either mined out of a video you already have or made from scratch.

Like the other making surfaces, arriving is the decision: each door **creates a
short** and takes you straight to the work.

## The three ways in

Your workspace can change these doors, so if yours reads differently from the
table above, yours is right.

### From a video

The mining arc, and it has a surface of its own with four steps across the top:

1. **Source** — the long video this short comes out of. You can change it.
2. **Find** — Goosy reads the master and ranks the moments, each with a hook
   and a score. You pick.
3. **Cut** — the moment you picked is cut to vertical with your captions burned
   in.
4. **Polish** — caption styling, the on-screen hook, and the template.

Shipping happens on the short's own board, through the same step every video
uses.

### Make a short

The creation arc, for a short that is not coming out of anything. It works the
way a video does — talk it through with Goosy, get a script, build the scene
plan, render it, review it, ship it — just at short length.

### I have footage

You already have the material. Drop the files straight into the conversation
rather than hunting for an upload button, and the short starts at **Cut** with
your footage in it.

## What "short" means here

The lane states it at the top of the page: *short-form, 30–100 seconds, 9:16 by
default — mined from your videos or made from scratch.* Those numbers are
settings, so if yours have been changed the page shows what yours actually are.

9:16 is where a new short starts, not the only shape it can be.

## Polish — the look

Polish is where a short stops being a trimmed clip and starts being publishable.

**Templates** decide how the frame is laid out:

| **Footage below, animated above** | Your footage holds the lower frame while the hook and motion play across the top. |
| **Captions through the middle**   | Full-bleed footage with the caption band riding the centre of the frame.          |
| **Screen + presenter**            | A screen recording with the presenter in picture-in-picture.                      |
| **Full bleed**                    | One shot, edge to edge, captions only where they earn it.                         |
| **Your saved style**              | The look you kept last time this workspace found one.                             |

**Captions** come in named styles — Word pop, Clean band, Subtitle — and Goosy
can suggest a **hook** for the opening seconds.

## The rest of the lane

**Pick up where you left off** lists the shorts already in production, one row
each. A row says which step it is on, which door it came through, what that
means in a sentence, and the verb for what comes next — *Pick the source*,
*Pick the moments*, *Plan the scenes*, *Polish it*, *Ship it*. A short that is
cut and rendered with only shipping left says **Ready to ship**.

**On deck** shows the short-form openings in this week's plan, each with its
day, its shape and the platform it is for. **Start this slot** begins a short
already bound to it.

## Where the work happens

The lane itself is a front door and nothing else — there is no trimming, no
caption editing and no template picking on this page. Every short has its own
board, and that is where the work is done. The cards on the lane link into it.

## Getting it out

A finished short goes out the same way anything else does: it takes a slot on
[the schedule](/work/schedule), with the platforms it is going to and the time
