# Ads

> The ads lane: the five ways to start a campaign, the board that assembles it, and the approval that stands in front of every dollar.

**Ads** in the sidebar is where a paid campaign is built. Like the other
lanes it is a front door: you choose how you want to start, the campaign is
created, and you land on its board.

**The ad account is yours.** Campaigns run on accounts you own, on the
platform's own billing — you are never buying media through us. Setting one up
is a guided walkthrough the first time; after that Goosy manages it for you.

## What are we running?

Five ways in — each one starts the campaign and takes you straight to its
board:

| Door | Use it when |
| ------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Talk it out** | You know who you want to reach and what you want back, and want Goosy to shape the campaign with you. |
| **From research** | You want to build off what your market is already running — or hand Goosy a screenshot to work from. |
| **More like this** | Something is working and you want to grow it — same idea, fresh angles. |
| **I have creative** | You are bringing your own images or video, and Goosy writes around them and sets the targeting. |
| **From an offer** | You are starting from the promotion — the discount, the launch, the seasonal push. |

Under the doors: **Pick up where you left off** holds the campaigns in flight,
each with the one thing to do next. **On deck** is what your market is running,
pulled from research — *Make our version* on any card starts a campaign from
it, and **Open research** on that same band crosses to the ad research surface,
where the advertisers you track and the style signals you save live.
**Finished** appears when campaigns have run their course; their full results
live in Analytics.

## The campaign board

A campaign is assembled in four parts, and the board tells you which one is
still outstanding in the same words a refused launch would use:

| Part | What it settles | Not done yet reads |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Define** | The platform, what you are aiming for, the name, and where clicks land. | *This campaign still needs a platform, something to aim for, a name, and somewhere for clicks to land.* |
| **Creative** | The images or video it runs. | *There are no finished creatives in the pool yet — add one from your library, or make one here.* |
| **Copy** | Which written direction it runs. | *Pick which copy direction this campaign runs.* |
| **Settings** | The budget, the dates, and who it targets. | *Set the budget and schedule before this can go for approval.* |

You can work through them in any order. The bar at the foot of the board names
the *first* thing standing between you and a launch rather than listing them
all.

The platform and the objective you choose are the platform's own — Meta,
Google, LinkedIn and Snapchat each offer their own set, and the board shows
that platform's list rather than a translated one.

If your campaign falls into a **special ad category** — **Credit offers**,
**Jobs and hiring**, **Housing**, or **Social issues, elections or politics** —
you declare it at **Define**. It is a legal statement you are making, not a targeting choice, and
declaring it narrows what the platform will let the campaign target.

## The approval in front of spend

When all four parts are settled the bar reads **Ready to launch** and states
exactly what is being committed: the campaign, how many creatives, the copy,
and the total for the run. The total is the daily budget across the days you
scheduled — not the daily figure.

Nothing spends until a person says yes.

| The bar reads | What is true |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Ready to launch** | Assembled and priced. Nothing has spent. |
| **Waiting on approval** | Submitted. Confirm it and the campaign goes live. |
| **Approved** | Nothing has spent yet — finish the launch to start it. |
| **Launched** | The campaign is live. |
| **Not approved** | Nothing was launched. Change it and send it again. |
| **Withdrawn** | Nothing spent. Change the campaign and send it again. |
| **Replaced** | A newer version of this launch took its place. |

Where your workspace requires a sign-off, the request lands in
[Review](/work/reviews) as a spend row carrying the amount, and a second
sign-off from your client can be required on top of it. Both are set under
**Settings → Account → Spending & approvals**, along with how much Goosy may do
on his own — see [How approvals work](/how-approvals-work) for the whole
picture.

Spending is one of the four things that never happens on an assistant's own
judgement, whatever role the person holds and whether the request came from you
clicking or from an assistant acting for you.

## After it is running

A campaign already live can be changed, and a change is its own decision: it
goes back through approval before it takes effect, and appears in Review as
*Approve ads change*. Results live in
[Analytics](/work/analytics), which has an ads drilldown of its own.
